His mercies are new every day
Coming off of gotcha day, it was a time of grieving and processing for Isla. For us, the goal was to support her--and just let her know she's in safe hands. We saw right away that she was sensitive to loud noises. She was overwhelmed by the busyness around us. Yesterday morning we signed the documents to make the adoption official. She is now one of us! Afterwards, we went to another government office and nearby photo business to get her Chinese passport (so she can travel in-country and get a US visa). The photo office was cold and loud, so getting the clear, front-facing picture was difficult. Every time we took her out of her warm blanket she got scared. Unfortunately, our initial photo attempts were not acceptable, so our quick visit turned in to a long ordeal. In the middle, the office closed for a two hour lunch, so we left and had lunch with our guide (which turned out to be a great cultural experience). When we returned, we made some more attempts at pictures while our guide, David, negotiated and navigated through the process for us. At last, our paperwork and pictures were deemed acceptable and we were able to return "home".
Back at the hotel, Isla was much more relaxed. We were able to see her smile and even giggle!
Gotcha day was so overwhelming for Isla that she wouldn't eat or drink. Also, we were not her regular caregivers, so it was clear she wasn't comfortable with us. So, when she smiled, giggled, and finally drank 3 1/2 ounces yesterday, it was a relief. We're continuing to see the ebb and flow of grieving and the beginning of trust-building. We're just in love with this little girl.
His mercies are new every day; Great is His faithfulness!
